BLACK ISSUES RECEIVES EDITORIAL EXCELLENCE AWARD

New York

Black Issues In Higher Education received Folio: magazine's annual Editorial Excellence Award in the education category for its July 19, 2001, edition.

The Editorial Excellence Award is a unique competition in that the entrants are held up to standards set by their own editors. Each entry is judged on how well it articulates and adheres to its editorial mission statement, and winners are determined by comparing the judges' evaluation of how each title fulfills its mission, as well as the quality of its content.

This year, judges included journalism professors from institutions such as Northwestern University and University of Mississippi, as well as representatives from the magazine publishing industry, including Time, Fortune, Redbook and Family Circle.

"This award is a welcomed affirmation of what Black Issues In Higher Education has been about since its inception in 1984," said Frank L. Matthews, editor in chief and publisher of Black Issues. "Our wonderful and loyal readers have encouraged and witnessed our ever-improving editorial quality. I'm especially proud and thankful for the dedicated excellence of Hilary (Hurd Anayso) and the editorial staff, as well as all the hard-working professionals at Cox, Matthews and Associates."

The awards ceremony, the 2002 Celebration of Excellence, is one of the highlights of the three-day Folio: Show, the premiere conference and exposition for the magazine publishing industry. The awards gala was held Oct. 29 at the New York City Hilton. Matthews and Hurd Anyaso, editor of Black Issues, accepted the award on behalf of Black Issues In Higher Education.

Presenting the awards were Steven Reddicliffe, editor of TV Guide and Frank Lalli, vice president of development of Readers Digest. The finalists for the Editorial Excellence Award were The Chronicle of Higher Education and Black Issues.
