Executive Profiles
DR. WILLIAM E. COX is the president and co-founder of Cox, Matthews & Associates Inc., as well as the editor-in-chief of Black Issues Book Review. His education credentials include a doctorate in higher education administration from The George Washington University and master's degrees in both counseling psychology and public administration from Ball State University. He earned his undergraduate degree from Alabama A&M University. Bill has also taken both graduate and post-graduate courses at the College of William and Mary, Harvard University and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Among his other experiences, Dr. Cox has developed and conducted higher education programs for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. His corporate experience includes tenure with General Electric Corporation, where, among other assignments, he performed design work on the Apollo spacecraft ground support system.
A recognized authority on the development and delivery of adult education and counseling services to military personnel, Dr. Cox was formerly responsible for the worldwide network of U.S. Air Force counseling professionals.
Among his numerous professional appointments, Dr. Cox is a member of the Board of Trustees of Excelsior College, the American Counseling Association Foundation Board, the Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students (BACCHUS) Board, the Advisory Boards of Millennium Bank of Reston, Va., the National Council for Education and Human Development at The George Washington University and the University of the District of Columbia Business School. He is also a life member of both the NAACP and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Bill has been married for 40 years and has two grandchildren. He enjoys reading, music, playing with his grandchildren, and divides his time between his homes in Virginia and Hermosa Beach, Costa Rica.
FRANK L. MATTHEWS is the co-founder of Cox, Matthews & Associates Inc. and publisher/editor-in-chief of Diverse: Issues In Higher Education.
Since 1965, when he and a few other Black students desegregated the public schools of his hometown of Sumter, South Carolina, Matthews has been involved in educational equity issues including and on up through the founding of Black Issues in Higher Education in 1983.
In 1971, he received a bachelor's degree in political science from Clemson University. He subsequently earned a juris doctor and a master's in business administration from the University of South Carolina in 1976.
Matthews has been affiliated with George Mason University for the past 29 years, teaching both in the Law School and School of Business Administration. In July 1988, Matthews was named Senior Scholar at GMU's Center for Policy Studies in Education. In his position as Assistant Senior Vice President and legal advisor for George Mason, he was responsible for employment compliance and regulatory matters that confronted the university during its period of rapid expansion.
Matthews has been active in many professional, civic and scholarly organizations, including past president of the Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Business Law Association. He sits or has sat on the boards of the Citizens Bank of Virginia, The Resources for the Future Think Tank, The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, the Clemson University Honors College, The Presidential Advisory Board of Clemson University, Blacks in Philanthropy, as well as other organizations.
He has conducted workshops, given lectures, published and presented scholarly works to and received citations from many local, state, and national higher education, civic and professional organizations. He has also written and contributed chapters to books dealing with education.
Matthews and his wife of 33 years, Joan Morgan Matthews, are the proud parents of two children, Maya Matthews-Minter and Frank Jonathan, and two grandsons, Franky Jaylen Matthews and Matthew Keith Minter.
RALPH NEWELL has been with Cox, Matthews & Associates Inc. since 1991 serving in a variety of positions, including director of advertising and executive manager. Currently, he is the vice president for business development & technology, where his responsibilities include the management of the company's business development strategies and all technology-related activities. In addition, Ralph and his team are responsible the company's Web sites and their related marketing and revenue streams.
Ralph received his undergraduate degree from the College of William & Mary and his master's in business administration from George Mason University.
When Ralph is not working at CMA in the fall, he can often be found on college football fields across America officiating. He enjoys cooking, traveling and spending time with his family. Ralph and his wife Nolana have two daughters, Sydney and Avery.
WILLIAM E. COX, JR. is the vice president of operations & advertising at Cox, Matthews & Associates Inc.
Will has been involved with CMA since its inception in 1984. His smaller supportive roles ranged from preparing correspondence and mailings for the launch of the company during his high school years, to operations assistant in between semesters during college, and later as an advertising production assistant.
Will earned his bachelor's of science degree in mathematics from Tuskegee University in 1992.
He also worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a statistician before rejoining CMA in August 2001 as the executive manager for strategic operations.
Currently, with the dual responsibility of operations and advertising, Will is in charge of the overall operations of CMA, as well as maintaining and increasing the advertising base, nurturing client relations, and seeking out new advertising opportunities in efforts to increase sales.
In addition, Will has executive producer credit on the Diversity Strategies For Today's Complex Environment videoconference program in 2002, the latest of the award-winning Black Issues In Higher Education videoconference series.
Will's hobbies include soccer, skiing and music.
MAYA M. MINTER is vice president for editorial and production at Cox, Matthews & Associates Inc., a firm specializing in publishing, satellite television production, training and consulting, with offices in Fairfax, Virginia and New York City.
Before rejoining CMA in September 2002, Maya worked with I.B.M. Corp., in Research Triangle Park, N.C., as an e-Procurement Manager.
Maya earned her bachelor's degree in government from the University of Virginia in 1994. She earned her master's in business administration from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 2001. From 1994-1995 Maya was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship as an Educational Advisor in Madrid, Spain.
Maya enjoys traveling to Spanish-speaking countries and spending time with her family.
