GRAND FORKS N.D.
A fund set up to pay legal bills in the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux nickname lawsuit against the NCAA has been exhausted.

The lawsuit ended with a settlement agreement that grants UND three years to either win tribal approval for its nickname and American Indian-head logo or retire them.

The school's $850,000 legal bill was paid with private donations to the litigation fund managed by the UND Foundation. An official says the fund came up about $1,000 short, but a donor is covering the shortfall.

The NCAA did not release the cost of its defense, but the judge in the case said the trial's total cost exceeded $2 million.
