Three South Carolina HBCUs Announce Technology Partnership

Columbia,S.C.
Three historically Black colleges in South Carolina, with the help of Rep. James E. Clyburn, D-S.C., chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, received $3.2 million in federal funding for an innovative partnership with the Savannah River Site.
Voorhees College, Allen University and Morris College, recognizing the need for well-trained environmental scientists teamed up to form the South Carolina Consortium. The consortium will work with the Savannah River Site to help develop capability at the three schools in the area of environmental science through cooperative research. The consortium also will develop a joint  curriculum to train students for employment in science-related industries and for pursuing graduate degrees.
The federal funding will be used to improve the instructional and research infrastructure in the sciences at each member institution; develop the capability of faculty and students to conduct research in Department of Energy and Savannah River Site areas of interest; develop linkages with Savannah River Site research training opportunities for faculty and students; develop a major in environmental sciences at selected institutions and to increase the awareness and interest of junior and senior high school students in environmental science. Voorhees College will manage the grant and serves as the lead institution.
