College of Santa Fe Struggles With Budget Deficits

Administrators at the College of Santa Fe are developing plans that could include laying off as much as 20 percent of the school's faculty.

The plans also could include eliminating a number of liberal arts degree programs.

College President Stuart Kirk says the plans are intended to address budget deficits that have ranged from $2 million to $4 million during the past four years.

He says the private, not-for-profit college needs to raise $6 million to $7 million this year to balance it's budget -- nearly a quarter of the $27 million it takes to run the school.

The college has depended on real-estate deals or borrowed money to help cover budget shortfalls in recent years.
