BURLINGTON, Vt. — The president of the University of Vermont says the school still has work to do on racial justice issues, but he didn’t agree to every change requested by students.
UVM President Tom Sullivan says the school would not expel a student found to have stolen a Black Lives Matter flag because the student has been disciplined.
Nor would Sullivan agree to change the name of the George Perkins building, saying it was Perkin’s son Henry, a former biology professor, who was involved in the eugenics movement in the last century.
Last week, a number of students held a rally calling for mandatory diversity training and a more diverse faculty.
The school removed a plaque commemorating “Kake Walk,” a winter ball in which students competed in a blackface performance competition.
