The University of Hawaii’s new Manoa chancellor says the campus is a tarnished jewel.
At her formal inauguration, Virginia Hinshaw said the campus is a jewel academically but tarnished physically.
She noted aging dorms, classrooms, offices, libraries and labs. Hinshaw says facilities must be refurbished if the school is to remain a Pacific destination of choice for scholars.
Despite praise for the school’s academic achievements, Hinshaw noted that its graduation rate is only about 55 percent, which is about 12 percent below comparable institutions.
Hinshaw comes to the university from the University of California-Davis, where she was provost and executive chancellor.
