MILWAUKEE
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee says it will start late-night walking patrols in the neighborhoods near the school, hire more officers and seek a review of its security procedures as part of a $500,000 campus safety initiative.
"Things have changed, and in some respects, things have gotten quite worse," Chancellor Carlos Santiago said in announcing the moves Tuesday. "I need to know whether there are things we are doing that are working, and I want to know what we can do to improve."
Santiago and UWM Police Chief Pamela Hodermann said the school will hire five more armed police officers and four more security guards.
They also said up to 24 students and campus police will do walking patrols from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m., possibly beginning at the end of this semester.
A new, independent 10-member task force chaired by Stan Stojkovic, dean of UWM's Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, is to review UWM's safety plan and make recommendations by late February or early March on how it can be improved.
The UWM Police Department will seek approval to get two additional police cruisers, Santiago and Hodermann said.
They also said school vans which offer free rides to UWM students throughout Milwaukee's east side from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. will start running through 4 a.m.
