Clark College’s Corporate Education (Wash.) unit has been awarded a $31,000 Job Skills Program (JSP) grant to provide training for Southwest Washington Medical Center. The grant will provide training for 25 SWMC directors, managers and supervisors on the topics of lean health care, training the trainer and leading change.

The Kentucky Adult Learner Initiative has been awarded $500,000 from the Lumina Foundation for Education for a statewide effort to increase the number of working-age adults with college degrees. Each public four-year institution will receive $50,000 to create or enhance adult-friendly policies and services.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund has received a donation of $400,000 from Virgis and Angela Colbert. Specifically, the funds will be used to support TMCF’s annual Leadership Institute and to establish the Virgis and Angela Colbert Scholarship endowment.

Prairie View A&M University (Texas) has been awarded a $1 million, three-year education research grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to identify and evaluate the factors that contribute to the success of academically gifted Black students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The research will focus on students who are enrolled at historically Black colleges and universities.

The University of Houston has been awarded a five-year, $2.3 million grant by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which is part of the National Institutes for Health (NIH). The funds will support the creation of the Minority Institutions’ Drug Abuse Research Development Program (DARDP) at UH.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine has been awarded $23.7 million by the National Institutes of Health to conduct clinical trials of vaccines and therapies for infectious diseases. The funds will be distributed over seven years.

The University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research and Wayne State University’s Institute of Gerontology (Mich.) have received a $3.3 million award from the National Institute on Aging to continue working on improving the health of elderly African-Americans.

Utah State University has received a donation of $26 million, the largest in its history, from Jon M. and Karen H. Huntsman. Twenty-five million is slated to go to the university’s business school and $1 million will be used for scholarships.

Winston-Salem State University (N.C.) has received $5.4 million from North Carolina Baptist Hospitals Inc. to continue its accelerated nursing education program and recruit more nursing students. The five-year agreement will allow students to receive a bachelor’s in nursing in 13 months.
