California State University, Dominguez Hills has received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program. In addition to helping the seven scholars who are currently participating in the initiative, 19 new students have been admitted into the research-intensive program.

Colorado College has received $10 million from the Inasmuch Foundation to help fund the new Antoine Predock-designed arts building. In honor of the Inasmuch Foundation’s founder, the building will be named the Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center.

The Pennsylvania State University has received a $5 million gift from Patrick and Candace Malloy to endow its head football coach position. The funds will be used to fund the coach’s expenses related to development, as in recruiting players.

Pomona College (Calif.) has been awarded nearly $1 million in grants by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Rose Hills Foundation and the Irvine Foundation. A $730,000 grant from the Moore Foundation will go to purchase science equipment, a $200,000 grant from the Rose Hills Foundation will fund student research and a $10,000 grant from the Irvine Foundation’s New Connections program will go to support the arts.

San Antonio College (Texas) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds, which will be distributed over four years, will serve to implement the Upward Bound Program with ninth- and 12th-graders at neighboring Fox Tech High School.

The University of Texas System and the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology have been awarded $180,000 to fund an initiative that will facilitate minority student participation at international conferences and meetings. The National Science Foundation’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program provided the funding.

The National Science Foundation has awarded Upstate New York colleges, including Syracuse University, Clarkson University, Cornell University, Monroe Community College, Onondaga Community College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Rochester Institute of Technology, $3 million to enroll more graduate students who are African-American, Hispanic and American Indian in technology, math and engineering fields. The funds will be distributed over five years.

Wake Forest University (N.C.) has received a $7 million gift from the estate of alumnus Dr. Ralph Wingate Bland, who passed away last year. The gift will be divided evenly between the university’s law school and medical school and will be used for scholarships. It is the largest gift in the medical school’s history.
