Spectrum’s Own ‘Emergency Teacher’

Devoted Diverse readers may recall that former senior editorChristina Asquith spearheaded thecreation of the Spectrum section in the magazine in 2006. In this issue, Spectrum highlights the publication of a new book by Asquith The Emergency Teacher: The Inspirational Story of a New Teacher in an Inner City School, from Skyhorse Publishing.

In The Emergency Teacher, Asquith recounts the academic year she spent, without training or certification, as a sixth-grade teacher at a public school in one of Philadelphia’s poorest neighborhoods.The experience proved dramatic and inspirational for her students and Asquith, who was designated an emergency teacher after joining the Philadelphia school to help alleviate a teacher shortage.
