Diversity Bill Aims to Curb School Violence in California

by Sarah Lake , February 22, 2008

California Assemblyman Mike Eng, D-Monterey Park, chairman of the Select Committee on Hate Crimes, has proposed a bill that would allocate up to $150,000 to establish a pilot diversity and sensitivity curriculum for select California school districts, according to a Los Angeles Times article.

This proposal comes after the murder of Lawrence King, 15, allegedly by classmate Brandon McInerney, 14. Prosecutors are calling the killing a hate crime against King because he was openly gay. Eng’s bill is an attempt to curb hatred that may lead to violence in California schools.

Eng said his bill would help to develop protocol for teachers and administrators to notify authorities when incidents of student harassment occur that may lead to a potential hate crime.

“Current law requires teachers, physicians and counselors to report possible sexual impropriety with youth, but we don’t have protocols dealing with hate crimes that could possibly result in violence,” Eng said.
