FAMU President to Receive National Award For His Achievements Tallahassee, Fla.
Florida A&M University president, Dr. Frederick S. Humphries, will be the first college president honored during the Turner Broadcasting System's Trumpet Awards ceremony this month in Atlanta.
The Trumpet Awards, which were founded in 1993, recognize African American achievers in fields such as law, politics and entertainment.
"This is the first time that we chose an institution and president to receive the award," says Xernona Clayton, creator and executive producer of the Trumpet Awards, which will air on TBS Superstation in February. "FAMU is one of those examples of what we call a great institution."
Since his presidency, Humphries has worked to make FAMU a premier institution of higher learning. His efforts were recognized in 1997 when the TIME magazine-Princeton
Review named FAMU "College of the Year" and when Black
Issues in Higher Education featured FAMU as the nation's No. 1 producer of African American baccalaureates.
In 1992, 1995 and 1997 FAMU surpassed Harvard, Stanford and Yale in the recruitment of National Achievement Scholars.
During the ceremony, Turner Broadcasting also will honor the late Justice Thurgood Marshall, singer/actress Leslie Uggams, baseball legend Willie Mays and former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm.
