Labor Department Suing Knoxville College, Ex-president

KNOXVILLE Tenn.

The U.S. Department of Labor is suing Knoxville College and former president Barbara Hatton to recover about $15,000 in retirement plan contributions it says the college never made.

In a lawsuit filed earlier this month, the federal agency said the college failed to make the required contributions on behalf of faculty and staff in the retirement investment plan from around August 2003 to June 2004.

The Department said Tuesday the college violated the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

Acting chief executive officer of Knoxville College Johnnie Cannon said the historically Black college is not contesting the suit and has agreed to pay the money.

Hatton was dismissed from the cash-strapped college in August 2005 following a lawsuit by a dozen professors who said they were owed more than $380,000 in salary and benefits.
