PHILADELPHIA
Four Temple University students face charges related to the beating of a man outside a Jewish fraternity on the Philadelphia campus, an attack police categorized as a hate crime.
Each of the students has been charged with assault, reckless endangerment, ethnic intimidation and related counts, police said Friday. The four have been suspended by the university, Temple officials said.
They are alleged to have used anti-Semitic slurs during the beating around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 15 outside the former house of Alpha Epsilon Pi, an international Jewish fraternity.
The 23-year-old victim, who is Jewish and attends The Pennsylvania State University, and his 22-year-old friend, also not a Temple student, were surrounded by a group of young men as they left a pizzeria near the fraternity, police said.
The beating victim, whose name was not released by authorities, suffered a broken nose and a fractured orbital bone in the attack. His companion was not seriously injured.
Three of the suspects whom authorities identified as Michael Walsh, 20, of Florham Park, N.J., and brothers David Scott, 20, and Steven Scott, 19, of Willow Grove, Pa., surrendered to police. A fourth suspect, identified as Bryan Pediero, 19, of East Brunswick, N.J., had not yet turned himself in, a police department spokeswoman said.
