Alumni of Antioch College in Ohio want to keep the school open, even if it means holding classes off campus.
After the college’s trustees announced last month the closure of the college for the 2008-09 school year, the boards of the Antioch College Alumni Association and College Revival Fund met and passed a resolution to continue classes next year even if it means holding classes off campus.
Ellen Borgersen, vice president of both the Alumni Association and the College Revival Fund, says that she hopes the on-going negotiations between the university trustees and the Antioch College Continuation Corporation (ACCC) will succeed.
“If they do, we’ll be ready to run the college on this campus without interruption. If they don’t, we’ll find someplace else in Yellow Springs to operate, and we’ll have to fight to reclaim the campus and the college’s other assets from a university administration that seems bent on destroying everything Antioch has ever stood for,” she says, adding that the college has eager faculty and a dedicated student body needed to keep the college going.
In November, the college’s board of trustees had decided to reverse an earlier decision to close the financially troubled college after alumni raised millions of dollars and reached an agreement in principle with the board. Last month, the board said time had run out and students and faculty needed to know the status of the college so that they could make other plans for the fall.
