College and university faculty members received a median salary increase of 4 percent last year, according to findings by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) in their 2007-08 National Faculty Salary Survey.
Some 211,424 faculty members at 339 public and 499 private institutions of higher education around the country participated in the survey.
The survey found that faculty of legal profession and studies, engineering, business, management, marketing and related support services were the highest paid for both private and public institutions. Instructors of area, ethnic, cultural and gender studies at private institutions were among the top three highest paid faculty, according to the study.
According to the survey, the lowest average salaries for all institutions are visual and performing arts, English language and literature/letters, parks and recreation, leisure and fitness studies.
The average salary for a new assistant professor at a public institution increased by 3.3 percent. Professors and associate professors at both public and private institutions increased by a survey high of 4 percent.
