CALHOUN COMMUNITY COLLEGE (Ala.) has received a donation of $1.8 MILLION from the late Josephine Powell of Decatur, Ala. The gift is the largest one-time monetary donation in the school’s 60-year history, and the funds will be used for Calhoun’s current capital campaign and to create new scholarships.

The CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK has received a $198,000 grant from the state of New York’s multimillion-dollar stem cell research program. The funds will support the training of personnel and the development of infrastructure for stem cell research.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has awarded a $13 MILLION grant to the CENTER OF VASCULAR BIOLOGY AT WEILL MEDICAL COLLEGE OF CORNELL UNIVERSITY (N.Y.) for biomedical research in vascular diseases.

Bob Barker, the former host of the daytime television show, “The Price is Right,” has donated $1 MILLION to his alma mater, DRURY UNIVERSITY (Mo.), to establish an undergraduate animal ethics program.

ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY (N.C.) has received a $750,000 grant from the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation to fund advanced practice experiences in northeastern North Carolina for fourth-year students and to establish a Drug Information Center at ECSU.

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF BUSINESS has received a $2 MILLION grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to establish the Gene Taylor/Bank of America Center for Banking and Financial Studies. Housed in the college’s department of finance, the center will be used to encourage excellence in education and fund research and service activities related to banking and finance.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has granted the INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF EDUCATION $1.8 MILLION to expand the immersive learning environment Quest Atlantis. It is a teaching and learning tool that uses a 3-D, multiuser environment that engages students.
