Faculty members’ salaries nationwide are not keeping up with inflation, while head football coaches, college presidents and other high level universities official are seeing a significant rise in pay, says a report by the American Association of University Professors.
Full-time faculty members saw an average rise in salary of 3.8 percent this year but inflation rose 4.1 percent during the same period, the report says. The salaries of head football coaches at Division I-A universities are 10 times that of senior professors at these universities, it says.
The disparity doesn’t stop at payroll, the report says. In “Where Are the Priorities? The Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession, 2007-08,” the AAUP reports that the number of college staff and administrators has risen while the number of tenured and tenure-track faculty has idled.
The number of tenured and tenure-track faculty has grown 17 percent over the last 30 years while the number of university staff has tripled, and university administrators have doubled.
