Course Watch: Expanding Offerings in Less Commonly Taught Languages

This semester, the University of Pittsburgh is offering a course in Xhosa, the second most widely spoken language in South Africa, through its linguistics and African studies departments.

Xhosa will be offered as part of the university’s Less-Commonly- Taught Languages Center; it is only one of about nine courses of its kind offered in the country, according to the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition. The course’s objective is for students to be able to communicate on a basic level, so that if they travel to South Africa for business or leisure, they will be able to converse with the locals.

Sipho Mbuqe, the course’s instructor, told the university newspaper, The Pitt News, that he also wants to give his students fundamental skills in reading and writing Xhosa and acquaint them with South Africa.
