The late Dr. Asa G. Hilliard III, renowned Pan- Africanist scholar, is being remembered with a $5,000 scholarship named in his honor by Road Scholar, an initiative of the world’s largest not-for-profit educational travel organization for adults, Elderhostel. As an educator, Hilliard championed the importance of African history, culture and influence, and through the years he conducted many study tours in Egypt with thousands of travelers.
This year, Road Scholar will award the scholarship to a Black educator with at least 10 years of experience who is also a member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators, a professor of African-American studies or a faculty member of a historically Black college or university. The scholarship will give the recipient a chance to experience a Road Scholar or Elderhostel program anywhere in the world.
Patsy Jo Hilliard, the widow of the late acclaimed scholar, says of the scholarship, “I am pleased that travelers will have the opportunity to explore new sites and return home and make significant contributions to their communities and/or classrooms on new information gained in the program, which can improve the quality of life for all involved. This is what Dr. Hilliard focused on in his travels — study, study, study.”
