Ala. Supreme Court Upholds Stay on Community College Double-dipping Ban

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Supreme Court is upholding a judge’s decision to temporarily block the implementation of the two-year college system’s double-dipping ban.

Alabama Education Association assistant secretary Mary Bruce Ogles said the teacher’s union received confirmation of the court’s decision Friday afternoon.

Montgomery County Circuit Judge Johnny Hardwick ordered in late March that the system’s new policies be halted.

If the policy had been in effect, it would have forced lawmakers with jobs in the college system to use vacation time to fulfill their duties in the Legislature during the session.

The education association is suing to have the policies thrown out altogether and wants them stayed until the Supreme Court hears the case.

Two-year college officials could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.
