For the time in 48 years, Lincoln University’s football team will take the field. They are scheduled to play George Mason University Saturday afternoon. The football game begins a huge weekend of home events for the Lincoln University Athletics Department.
The historically Black university, located in Chester County, Pa., is using the re-establishment of football to enhance its student life, attract interest from alumni, and get the word out to high school students and their parents about the quality of the institution, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Lincoln’s initial football program started in 1894 and was one of the founding teams of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), an athletic conference consisting of 10 HBCUs. Next year, Lincoln will be welcomed back into the conference.
Founded in 1854, Lincoln’s graduates include Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and poet Langston Hughes. Horace Mann Bond, father of civil rights leader Julian Bond, served as the university’s president from 1945 to 1957.
