Surf Your Way to a Diploma

North Island College in Vancouver Island, Canada, is now offering North America’s first surfing studies program, according to a report by Canwest News Service. In conjunction with an Australian University, the two-year program is designed to teach the business behind the sport.

Through the program, students will learn to teach lessons, manage surf shops or work for surfing companies around the globe. Classes will include surfboard design, event planning and traditional business subjects; at completion students will receive a diploma of sports management in surfing studies.

“There is an amazing number of positions right now waiting for people in the business,” said Barbie Mayor, Canada’s top surfing judge and the program’s creator, in a Canwest report.
