Puerto Rican Fund Expands Its Title

NEW YORK

New York’s Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund is changing its name.

The fund’s board of directors announced the change on Monday. It will be known as the Latino Justice P.R.L.D.E.F – to reflect its broader mission of serving clients from Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and elsewhere.

“There is a coming together of identification in a common struggle,’’ said Cesar A. Perales, the organization’s president and general counsel.

On the organization’s website, David Arroyo, Latino Justice PRLDEF’s Chairman of the Board, said: “We have been protecting the civil rights of all Latinos for many years and our new name is a more accurate reflection of the national scope and pan-Latino nature of the work we do. Our name may change, but our commitment to the Latino community — including the Puerto Rican community — remains just as strong as ever.”
