Leading Education Organizations Push for New Federal Role in Public Schools

A partnership of 18 leading national education associations are calling for a new federal role in the public school system, according to a statement released Tuesday.

The Learning First Alliance statement says federal efforts to help the nation’s pubic education system have become distorted over the past decade by trying to micromanage schools without providing the support they need. Instead, LFA wants the federal government to collaborate with schools to provide greater support for students in need and create more transparent shared accountability.

“Now more than ever, we need federal policies that build public educators’ capacity to prepare all children to thrive in an increasingly challenging world,” says Brenda Welburn, LFA board chair and executive director of the National Association of State Boards of Education. “In this time of alarming economic uncertainty, federal investments in education are critical investments in the nation’s long-term prosperity.”

LFA members also want a broad vision of student learning, adequate funding for students in need and support for the education profession.
