Critics of MVSU president pick set to protest

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The state's preferred choice to lead Mississippi Valley State University is scheduled to visit the campus Tuesday.

Donna Oliver's visit will come amid a protest from students and alumni seeking to prevent her from being named the school's next president. The College Board selected Oliver, the provost and vice president of academic affairs at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida, last week as its choice to lead the historically black college in Itta Bena.

The decision stunned some faculty, staff, alumni and students who supported interim president Roy Hudson, who's led the university after former president Lester Newman resigned in June 2007. Hudson has been at Mississippi Valley since 1973.
