For the first time a new study will examine the field of education research in United States’ graduate schools and colleges. The American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Academy of Education (NAEd) are joining forces for this assessment of education research doctorate programs, which produce around 1,800 doctorates each year.
This study will examine programs in 16 major fields of education research, including mathematics and science education, teaching and teacher education, curriculum and instruction, educational psychology, higher education, and educational policy. Funded by the National Science Foundation, study researchers will assess education research doctorates at over 900 programs at 120 universities.
Though there have been studies of research doctorate programs in other arts and science fields, almost no attention has been paid to education research.
“The assessment is central to understanding the substance and quality of education research doctorate programs. Scholars trained through these programs are central to advancing our knowledge about education in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and in other fields of learning,” says Dr. Lorrie Shepard, NAEd president who is also the study’s co-principal investigator.
NAEd works to advance education research in forming policy, while partner organization AERA represents scholars in education research.
