A task force created by the Legislature to advance the cause of educating Hispanic students is struggling with its identity and its future.

At a meeting Friday at the Capitol for members of the Advancement of Hispanic Students in Higher Education Task Force Rep. Shane Jett said the current political climate creates doubt about whether the Legislature would extend the life of the panel, which was created in 2004 and is scheduled to become dormant on July 1, 2009. The group discussed options, including the possibility of becoming a citizens’ committee.

The Tecumseh Republican said words like ``Hispanic,'' and ``multicultural'' and ``diversity'' are not popular in the lexicon of the new, all-Republican Legislature.

The GOP led the fight for passage of bill that ruled out scholarship aid for undocumented students. Jett has been highly critical of the bill.
