Learning Financial Planning Through Gaming

Last summer, freshmen at Saint Joseph College (Conn.) were not just prepared to navigate their school’s campus after freshmen orientation, but they were armed to wade through difficult financial times with the university’s new online course, “MoneyU.”

In an interactive game environment students were taught how to spend wisely, manage credit cards, manage debt and save money. They also learned about taxes, insurance, banking, financial planning and how credit scores affect their future.

Stephen Seaward, director of the Career Development Center at Saint Joseph College, stated in a press release, “College students are amassing significant amounts of debt at a soaring rate by the time they graduate. MoneyU helps students make informed decisions when it comes to personal financial management, and those decisions need to start in their freshmen year.”
