California State University Northridge’s Center for Community-Service Learning received a $10,000 grant from the
Starbucks Foundation for child literacy programs.

Indiana University in Bloomington received a Shared University Research grant for $1 million from International Business Machines (IBM). The grant will provide an upgrade to the university’s IBM RS/6000 Research SP supercomputer.
Jackson State University’s (Miss.) Office of Research and Strategic Initiatives received $4.37 million in state funding (Check) for the university’s new and existing research programs.

Morgan State University in Baltimore received $500,000 from alumnus Calvin Tyler Jr. to establish an endowed scholarship fund for disadvantaged
students.

Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., received more than $5 million from Ford Motor Co. to create the Perception Based Engineering Laboratory and to support interdisciplinary research in robotic assembly systems.

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at South Carolina State University received a $180,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture Teaching grant. The grant will benefit South Carolina teachers, students and the
university’s retention and recruitment efforts.
The College of Education at Penn State University’s received $6 million in federal funds to establish the Institute for Research in Family Literacy. This endowment comes as part of a substantial educational spending bill signed by former President Clinton in December 2000.
