University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Loses Black Enrollment

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.  - A report from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission says the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga has lost 4.2 percent of its Black student enrollment percentage over six years.

UTC admissions director Yancy Freeman told The Chattanooga Times Free Press the decrease amounts to about 60 students, but he said he feels very good about black enrollment in the upcoming academic year.

Twelve percent more black students applied for admission this fall than last year and 14 percent more black students have been admitted.

The Chattanooga campus has the largest percentage of black students in the UT system at 16 percent, but the campuses at Knoxville and Martin have gained in the percentage of African-American students since 2003, according to the THEC report.
