AWARDING EXCELLENCE

The fourth annual Celebracion de Excelencia will be held Sept. 30 at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center Atrium in Washington, D. C. The Examples of Excelencia, sponsored by Excelencia in Education, is the only national program to identify programs with evidence of effectiveness in accelerating Latino student success at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels. At this event, programs from each level receive a certifi cate, $5,000 and a release of the 2009 edition of “What Works for Latino Students in Higher Education Compendium.”

In conjunction with Diverse, this year’s program also includes the presentation of the Dr. John Hope Franklin Award to Dr. Arturo Madrid, professor of humanities at Trinity College. Madrid is credited with bringing the best intellectual talent to bear on the challenges facing the nation’s Hispanic population. He was selected for scholarship and leadership in higher education consistent with the standards of excellence established by Franklin.
