MIT Names its First Black Academic Dean

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —  Dr. Isaac M. "Ike" Colbert has been named Dean for Graduate Students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and will be a member of the Academic Council effective July 1. Colbert will be the first Black academic dean in the history of the institution.
Colbert has served as senior associate dean for graduate education since 1996 and has held several other administrative positions since coming to MIT in 1977.
He also is known throughout the academy for his tireless efforts to increase the numbers of minorities and women pursuing graduate degrees in the sciences. For example, he administers a ten-week summer program designed to give undergraduates from historically Black colleges a chance to acquire research experience at MIT.
"Ike Colbert is tireless in his advocacy for graduate students and in his efforts to promote graduate education," says MIT President Charles M. Vest.  "I look forward to his future contributions and participation on Academic Council."
Colbert, a 1968 graduate of the John Hopkins University, earned his master's and doctorate from Brown University in experimental psychology.
