Online National Science Digital Library to Open In 2002

WASHINGTON
The National Science Digital Library, due to be launched in 2002 on the Internet, will allow users to browse resources in science, mathematics, engineering and technology education from libraries nationwide. The National Science Foundation is funding the initiative.
Library collaborators include teams of computer scientists and librarians at Cornell, Columbia and the University of Missouri. The NSDL may also provide library tours, collection tours and tools for educators and students to personalize the NSDL portal.
Carol Terrizzi, communication director for Cornell's Site for Science, one of the collaborators on the project, describes the site as "one library with many portals."
"The NSF wants to increase the educational opportunities for students, teachers and the lifelong curious in this country," she says.
The Site for Science is considered one of the models for the library. Possible features of the NSDL include library tours, collection tours, and tools for teachers and students to personalize their own library portals, according to officials.
