Ball State University (Ind.) received a $20 million four-year grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., to educate students for the digital media revolution.

Delaware State University's Applied Optics Department will receive $73,033 from the Office of Naval Research for a project that will enhance optical coupling efficiency in optical fibers using two-beam interference; the Education Department will receive $46,094 from the Delaware Department of Education to support the Higher Education and Disabilities Program offered to teachers seeking professional development and to students seeking teacher certification. In addition, the university's physics department will receive $80,006 from the Office of Naval Research for the purchase of a Rapid Thermal Processor System. The high-temperature processor will be used for semi-conductor material and devices research.

Microsoft Corp. will donate $7.2 million toward a $70 million computer science center being built at the University of Washington.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology was recently awarded a $2.5 million grant from the New Jersey Higher Education Commission to offer a pre-engineering curriculum for middle and high-school students to prepare them to study engineering in college.

The University of Southern California has received $22 million from the National Institutes of Health to continue research into the genes responsible for some of the most common and deadly forms of cancer.

Winston-Salem State University (N.C.) has received a three-year $300,000 U.S. Department of Education grant to enhance instruction by offering online courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry and physical science.
