Morris Brown College Wins Moby Award

ATLANTA
Morris Brown College has won recognition for its partnership with Toshiba America Information Systems Corp. for wireless and mobile computing. This fall, the Atlanta-based college won a MOBY award for its collaboration with Toshiba in the category of education. The MOBY awards are sponsored by Mobile Insights, a company recognized as a leading authority on mobile computing and data communications.
"Receiving this award puts us under the international spotlight," says Dr. Jesse Wang, vice president of the Office of Information Technology at Morris Brown.
Morris Brown was recognized for making the transition from a campus with few Internet-wired computers to one where a school mandate put laptops with wireless Internet connection in the hands of all its students. In fall 2000, the school purchased 3,200 Toshiba Satellite 2180CDT notebook computers. Through a purchase program linked to  student tuition, the notebook computers were distributed to the Morris Brown students, who also gained access to the Internet through the school's new wireless network.
Among historically Black schools, Morris Brown and Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., were among the first to mandate laptop computer ownership by its students. Morris Brown, Howard University, Virginia Union University and Savannah State University were among the first historically Black schools to have wireless networks established on their campuses. Currently, Morris Brown, Virginia Union, and Alabama's Stillman College have both a laptop ownership requirement and a widely deployed wireless campus network.
