Professional Appointments

Dr. Minnie Holmes-McNary has been named assistant professor in the department of human nutrition at Ohio State University. Holmes-McNary has held positions at  the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine. She earned dual bachelor's degrees from the University of Illinois at Springfield and a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has been awarded a 2001 Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education for showing an extraordinary commitment to the improvement of education. Hrabowski earned a bachelor's from Hampton University, and a master's and doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Marvalene Hughes, president of California State University-Stanislaus, has been honored as the Distinguished Educator for 2001 by her alma mater, Florida State University. Hughes was the first African American to earn a doctorate from Florida State. Hughes earned a bachelor's and a master's, both from Tuskegee University.

 Herbert Sledge Jr., director of public relations at Baltimore City Community College, has been selected to receive the Distinguished Black Marylanders Award by the Towson University Office of Diversity Resources. Sledge earned a bachelor's from Morgan State and juris doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law.

Baron D. Thrower has been named the new senior vice president of corporate systems for ACT Inc., the organization best known for its college entrance and placement exam. Previously, he was chief information officer and vice president of ITT Telecommunications Inc. Thrower earned a bachelor's from Langston University in Oklahoma.

Dr. Ted Williams, a professor of chemistry at the College of Wooster in Ohio, has been awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. Williams earned a bachelor's from Howard University, a master's from Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate from the University of
Connecticut.
