Supercomputing Conference Seeks Faculty Participation

BALTIMORE
An upcoming supercomputing conference in Baltimore is seeking the participation of teams of undergraduate faculty and K-12 teachers to spend four days in hands-on workshops learning about high-performance computing and communications tools and resources appropriate for their classroom.
Entitled this year as SC2002, the annual conference features high-performance computing and communications demonstrations and discussions. The event allows leading scientists, engineers, technologists and educators to display and learn about the latest research, education and developments in high -performance computing and communications technologies. K-12 teachers and undergraduate faculty members participate in the SC2002 Education Program.
The SC2002 Education Program runs from Nov. 16-19, and the full SC2002 Conference runs from Nov. 16-22 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Chairing the conference is Boston University professor Dr. Roscoe Giles. Giles is the first African American chairman of the supercomputing conference (see Black Issues, Feb. 28).
The SC2002 Education Program encourages the participation of faculty from two- and four-year colleges, primarily undergraduate and minority-serving institutions. K-12 teachers are asked to partner with undergraduate faculty to address teacher preparation and enhancement.
SC2002 participants will have the opportunity to attend technical sessions, state-of-the-field talks, panels and presentations; as well as view exhibits of high-performance computing and communications vendors and researchers demonstrating their latest research, products and services. They also will have the opportunity to interact with leading scientists and engineers from around the world and spend time with fellow educators, sharing experiences and resources. Selected educators will be supported throughout the year as they work on integrating appropriate tools into their courses.
Educators are asked to apply as a team of two to six members. All team members must complete an application form at <www.sc-conference.org/sc2002/education> by April 26. Participants will be selected by May 31.
Teams selected through the national application process will be provided with travel allowances, lodging, meals, course instructional materials and teacher substitutes.
