We at Eastern Washington University, just 30 miles from the north Idaho border, are having a different experience than that described in Kendra Hamilton's article "Race in the College Classroom" in your March 14 issue.
Our courses in African American studies are filled to overflowing with 100-plus students in most classes. We have added additional sections to accommodate large waiting lists. Many students also successfully complete a minor in African American studies.
The reasons for these extraordinary class sizes are twofold. One is a genuine interest by our students to learn about different cultures, particularly African American culture. The other, we believe, is the skill of faculty who teach about the often-difficult history and events in a challenging manner.
We are very proud of our students' seriousness in learning about African American history and culture and their willingness to discuss current events to develop a more global understanding.
