UC San Diego Approves Undergrad Degree in Black Diaspora and African American Studies

University of California San Diego has approved an undergraduate degree in Black Diaspora and African American Studies.

Uc San Diego E1618591198664The African American Studies program will administer the degree and continue to offer the minor as well. New majors will be accepted starting fall quarter 2022.

“One of the overarching goals of the new degree is to help students understand the critical spaces Black people hold in society: culturally, politically, economically and socially,” said program director Dr. Thandeka Chapman. “It will also provide theoretical and conceptual tools for students to learn about the complexities of race and racism, capitalism, colonization and imperialism.”

Students can major in one of three concentrations: the Africa and Black Diaspora, African American Studies, and the third will be interdisciplinary,
