Top of the Top 100
In 1992, Black Issues produced the first annual Top 100 ranking of colleges and universities. The ranking is based on each institution’s degree production performance among people of color in various degree categories. Over the years, the special reports featuring these rankings have become among our top selling editions.
For the 15th Anniversary Edition, we identified schools that have most consistently appeared at the top of the Top 100. We then selected the 15 institutions that have most consistently appeared at the top of our annual lists, awarded points corresponding to their rank for each year, and calculated an average score. For example, a school ranking third for two years and then fifth for the remaining six would have an average score of 4.5. Finally, the schools were arranged from 1 to 15 based upon the eight-year average score. Below are the results of the anniversary rankings:
15 Top 100 Minority Baccalaureate Degree Producers
1) University of California-Berkeley (Average Rank: 1.6): Berkeley holds an average rank of 1.6 over the 8 years of the Top 100. The school has ranked in the top five since 1992 and made the number ranking one four years in a row, from 1993 to 1996.
2) University of California-Los Angeles (2.0): UCLA has also ranked in the top five schools producing minority graduates and the school has ranked in the top 2 since 1994. UCLA has ranked number one in the last three years.
3) Florida International University (3.2): In the first year of the ranking, Florida International ranked ninth, by 1996 it consistently placed third.
3) University of Hawaii-Manoa (3.2): In 1992 and 1993, the University of Hawaii-Manoa ranked second among schools producing minority baccalaureates, in 1994 and 1995, it ranked third, and since 1995 it has ranked fourth.
5) University of Texas-Austin (5.7): UT-Austin has consistently ranked fifth in the Top 100 since 1993, until this year when it placed sixth.
6) San Francisco State University (7.1): In the first year of the ranking, San Francisco State ranked fifth, in 1999, it ranked 11th and remained among the top 15 schools graduating minorities.
7) University of California-Irvine (8.6): UC-Irvine has risen from number 19 in 1992 to number 5 in 1999, holding steadily over the last eight years at the sixth or seventh spot.
8) California State University-Long Beach (9.2): In the first four years of the Top 100 listing, Cal State-Long Beach usually placed at number 7, 8, or 9.
9) California State University-Los Angeles (9.5): In the last four years of the Top 100 listing, Cal State-Los Angeles has over taken Long Beach and ranked at number 7 or 8.
10) San Jose State University (11.1): In 1992, San Jose State ranked seventh and 15 years later it holds the same rank. Over the last eight years it has remained among the top 10 ranking schools.
11) University of Washington (13.6): The University of Washington first appeared on the Top 100 at number 22, over the years it has risen to its current ranking at number 8, holding the 11th spot in the last two years.
12) Rutgers University-New Brunswick (14.7): Rutgers held its highest ranking in 1993 at number 9 and recently it’s had a strong showing at number 15.
13) California State University-Fullerton (15.2): Cal State-Fullerton ranked 13th in 1992 and this year the school came in at number 12. Over the years the school has bounced through the rankings usually landing at the 16th, 17th, or 18th spot.
14) San Diego State University (15.5): Over the history of the Top 100, San Diego State has had the most steady ranking, coming in at the 12th, 13th, or 14th spots consistently.
15) University of Maryland-College Park (16.5): The University of Maryland consistently ranked among the top 15 schools graduating minorities until 1996 when it began to falter. This year, UMD moved up a bit in the ranks to number 19.
15 Top African American Baccalaureate Degree Producers among traditionally White and historically Black institutions
1) Howard University (Average Rank: 2.0): Over the course of the rankings, Howard ranked number one and two, dropping below the top 2 only once — in 1993 when the school ranked 8.
2) Hampton University (3.5): Hampton typically placed among the top 5 schools graduating African American baccalaureates, ranking second and third.
2) North Carolina A&T State University (3.5): A&T held strong over the years at the third and fourth rank.
4) Southern University and A&M College (3.6): In 1992 and 1993, Southern ranked second after Howard. In the last two years, the school has ranked fourth.
5) Florida A&M University (4.5): While FAMU appeared at number 12 in the first year of the Top 100, it soared into the number one spot in 1997 and has held it since.
6) Grambling State University (5.7): Grambling has appeared in the rankings almost consistently at number 5.
7) Jackson State University (7.3): In 1992, Jackson State ranked fifth; this year, it ranked 11th.
8) Norfolk State University (8.6): Over the years, Norfolk State has made a strong showing at the number 8 spot.
9) South Carolina State University (10): S.C. State rose from its steady rank at 10th and 11th to eighth in 1998, but it fell to 16th this year.
10) Morgan State University (11.2): This year, Morgan rose to number 9 after consistently ranking at 12 and 13.
10) Chicago State University (11.2): Chicago State has bounced up and down the ranks of top 15 schools, starting at 18 in 1992 and landing at number 7 this year.
10) North Carolina Central University (11.2): NCCU has also appeared sporadic in the rankings, holding the 13th spot in 1995 then moving up to the ninth spot in 1996 and dropping to 13 again in 1997.
13) Prairie View A&M University (13.2): In 1992, Prairie View ranked 11th and this year it ranked 18th.
14) Temple University (15.0): Temple has risen through the ranks from 20th in 1993 to its recent rank of 13.
15) Tennessee State University (19.2): In 1992, TSU held its highest spot in the rankings at 15 in the last few years it has held steady at 16 and 17.
15 Top Hispanic Baccalaureate Degree Producers
1) Florida International University (Average Rank: 1.0): In all eight years of the rankings, Florida International has ranked number one. It’s worth mentioning that in 1992, there was another listing of schools graduating Hispanic baccalaureates including all U.S. territories. The University of Puerto Rico dominated that list.
2) University of Texas-El Paso (2.2): In 1992, UTEP ranked fourth, but in all subsequent years it has ranked second.
3) University of Texas-Austin (3.4): UT-Austin has consistently ranked at third or fourth.
4) University of Texas-Pan American (4.0): UTPA, formerly Pan American University, debuted at number 2 in the rankings and has placed third in the last two years.
5) University of California-Los Angeles (4.8): UCLA has consistently ranked fifth among schools graduating Hispanic baccalaureates.
6) University of Texas-San Antonio (7.7): Last year, UTSA ranked fifth after consistently ranking seventh and eighth.
7) California State University-Los Angeles (8.1): In 1992, Cal State ranked sixth. Between 1993 and 95, the school experienced a dip in the rankings, but rose again to the sixth spot in 1996.
8) University of California-Berkeley (8.7): UC-Berkeley has ranked among the top 15 schools graduating Hispanic baccalaureates in all 8 years. Last year, the school ranked 12th.
9) University of New Mexico (9.2): UNM has held the 10th spot since 1997.
10) San Diego State University (9.9): San Diego has held the eighth spot since 1997.
11) Texas A&M University (12.1): Between 1995 and 1998, Texas A&M ranked 11th, but fell to number 17 last year.
12) California State University-Fullerton (12.8): In 1992, Cal State-Fullerton placed at number 12, the school has gone up and down in the rankings, landing at number 9 this year.
13) California State University-Long Beach (14.0): Cal State-Long Beach ranked 16th in 1992, this year it ranked 15th.
14) New Mexico State University (14.8): New Mexico State held its highest ranking in 1992 at seventh, in 1999 it held its lowest at 19th.
15) California State University-Fresno (15.6): Cal State-Fresno rose through the ranks from its low of 25 in 1992 to the 11th spot this year.
15 Top Asian American Baccalaureate Degree Producers
1) University of Hawaii-Manoa (Average Rank: 1. 2): In the last seven rankings, the University of Hawaii-Manoa ranked number one. Last year, it fell to number three.
2) University of California-Berkeley (1.8): Berkeley rose to the number one spot last year after holding the number two rank in all previous years.
3) University of California-Los Angeles (2.7): UCLA rose to the number two spot after holding the number three rank in all previous years.
4) University of California-Irvine (4.1): UC-Irvine has consistently held the number 5 and number 4 spot in seven of the eight years of the ranking.
5) San Francisco State University (5.1): Between 1992 and 1995, San Francisco State ranked fourth, it fell to eighth this year.
6) University of Washington (6.6): UW has been among the top 10 universities graduating Asian American baccalaureates since 1992, mostly holding the sixth and eighth rank.
7) San Jose State University (7.1): In 1994, SJSU held its lowest rank at 13, but in all other years the school has placed either fifth, sixth, or seventh.
8) University of California-Davis (7.8): U.C.-Davis debuted in the rankings at number 13, this year the school raked seventh.
9) California State University-Long Beach (9.4): Cal State-Long Beach has consistently ranked ninth or 10th.
10) California State Polytechnic University-Pomona (10.4): Cal Tech has made sporadic appearances at the 11th spot over the years.
11) California State University-Fullerton (12.3): Cal State-Fullerton has made sporadic appearances at the 12th and 13th spots.
12) California State University-Los Angeles (12.7): In 1992 and 1993, Cal State-Los Angeles ranked at number 10, this year the school ranked at 17.
13) University of Illinois-Urbana/Champagne (14.0): The University of Illinois has held a number of spots ranging from 11th to 17th over the years.
14) University of Maryland-College Park (15.6): The University of Maryland has also bounced in and out of the top 15 schools graduating Asian American baccalaureates, ranking 16th this year.
15) University of Texas-Austin (16.6): UT-Austin has risen through the rankings from its debut at 22nd to its current rank at 13.
15 Top Native American Baccalaureate Degree Producers
1) Northeastern State University (Average Rank: 1.2): Northeastern State only ranked second in 1992 and 1994; all other years the school ranked first in graduating Native American baccalaureates.
2) Southeastern Oklahoma State University (1.7): Southeastern ranked first in 1992 and 1994, ranking second all other years.
3) Northern Arizona University (4.0): Northern Arizona has consistently held the fourth and fifth spots in the rankings.
4) University of North Carolina-Pembroke (4.9): In the earlier years of the ranking, UNC-Pembroke, formerly Pembroke State, ranked at the third and fourth spots. This year the school ranked ninth.
5) Oklahoma State University (5.0): Oklahoma State rose from the number 8 spot in 1992 to the number 3 spot in 1999.
6) University of New Mexico (6.0): UNM has consistently ranked fifth, sixth, or seventh over the years.
7) University of Oklahoma-Norman (8.5): In 1992, the University of Oklahoma ranked 14th. This year, the school ranked fifth.
8) Arizona State University (12.1): Arizona State jumped 11 spots in the rankings between 1992 and 1993 from 21st to 10th. This year, it ranked 13th.
9) University of California-Berkeley (13.2): UC-Berkeley debuted in the rankings at number 11, but the school fell to number 21 last year.
10) University of Washington (13.3): UW rose from 22nd in 1992 to seventh in 1999.
11) University of Central Oklahoma (14.0): Formerly Central State University, the University of Central Oklahoma has bounced in and out of the top 15 schools graduating Native American baccalaureates, landing at number 12 this year.
12) University of Alaska-Fairbanks (16.7): Over the course of the rankings, the University of Alaska held its highest rank at number 10 in 1994 and 1995. It lowest rank was 28 in 1998.
13) San Diego State University (16.1): Between 1992 and 1995, San Diego State ranked among the top 15 schools, but in 1996 and in subsequent years if fell to its current rank of 30.
14) Fort Lewis College (17.2): Fort Lewis College has risen from its first ranking at 24 to its current rank at number eight.
15) Oregon State University (20.7): Oregon State ranked consistently among the top 15 schools, until 1997 when in plummeted to 28th, then dropped further over the last two years to number 41.
