I work for the North Carolina Health Careers Access Program (NC-HCAP) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. NC-HCAP is a program that prepares underrepresented minorities and people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds to become competitive applicants of undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. Generally, these students are prospective health professionals. The goal of NC-HCAP is to help reduce health disparity issues. The article “Race Matters in Health Care” (see Black Issues, May 23) directly addresses the issues we are combating. Hopefully, ours and the efforts of others are not meaningless.
I’ve been reading Black Issues for the past six months or so. I find your articles intriguing and insightful. More than that, your articles have encouraged me to read more informative articles like those printed in Black Issues. I believe what you do is very important, especially so, since I am a Black male entering into a Ph.D. program (Educational, Psychology, Measurement, and Evaluation-EPME) this fall at a predominantly White university.
It’s encouraging to know that minority issues are being brought to the forefront of the agendas of policy-makers and the like. Nonetheless, I just want to say, keep up the good work. Your efforts are recognized by many. Aaron Keith McCullough
