CD-ROM Research Guide on South Africa
Produced at Howard UniversityWASHINGTON
The South African Research and Archival Project (SARAP) at Howard University has produced a research guide on a CD-ROM designed to identify, locate, access, process and disseminate archival information on the South African/African American relationship from the Apartheid period to its dismantling.
The research guide features information about the location of evidence (oral, literary and visual), the value and condition of the documents and any restrictions placed on them. Narrative statements summarize the content of the materials included in the printed and electronic guides.
"This definitely has the potential to become as big as the history of South Africa itself," says South African Ambassador Sheila Sisulu during a briefing and project unveiling at Howard.
SARAP focuses on Black South Africans who fled apartheid in search of freedom, economic and educational opportunities, and the linkage of their stories to those of African Americans who struggled for human and civil rights, according to Dr. Joseph E. Harris, a professor of history at Howard.
"This combination of experience assures that high priority is placed on historical context as well as the skills of identifying, collecting, cataloguing and evaluating primary data for the preparation of the research guides," Harris says.
In addition to CD-ROM format, research guide information will be published on a forthcoming Web site.
