D.C. Tuition Program Gains FundingThe Senate would provide full funding of $17 million next year for the college tuition assistance program for District of Columbia residents.
In a tight budget year, full funding is critical because of a recent expansion in the project's scope, says Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C. The Senate's recommendation is "especially welcome this year," since a new provision of the law allows D.C. residents to receive tuition discounts when attending any historically Black college or university in the country.
The program began under the Clinton administration, offering D.C. high school graduates discounted tuition to study at the nation's public colleges. Since the city lacks a traditional state college system, the program would enable D.C. residents to pay "in-state" tuition rates at any public college nationwide.
The new provision was designed to help recent graduates who want to pursue degrees at HBCUs. Small tuition discounts also are available for individuals who want to study at private colleges and universities in the Washington, D.C., area.
