Health Web Site for Black Women Launched
By Ronald Roach

WASHINGTON

The National Black Women’s Health Project has launched what is destined to be the pre-eminent online gathering place on health for African American women, .

Recognizing the importance and power of the Internet, as well as the growing rate of Internet use by African American women, the National Black Women’s Health Project has created an online resource containing trustworthy, authoritative information that focuses on African American health.

During the research phase of planning the site, it became readily apparent that there was a dearth of health Web sites targeting African American women in culturally appealing ways.

“Our hope is to literally save thousands of lives by offering the most comprehensive, interactive Web place in existence for African American health,” says Dr. Lorraine Cole, president and chief executive officer of the National Black Women’s Health Project.

Visitors to the site can take online health assessments and get a list of questions to ask their doctors based on their personal health profile. There are personalized self-care programs and tools for weight management, physical activity and even to stop smoking. There is detailed information about numerous health conditions and links to more than 300 other health resources.

The site contains the latest health news of medical breakthroughs and women can find out how to participate in medical research studies.

Also, there is an Ask the Expert area staffed by some of the nation’s leading Black doctors who will answer health questions online.
