Web Site Presents Visual Record Of the Atlantic Slave Trade

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.

More than 800 images will comprise a visual gallery documenting the Atlantic slave trade and slavery in the Americas in a Web site maintained by the University of Virginia and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Visitors to the Web site, <gropius.lib.virginia.edu/Slavery/>, can already view several hundred images in the collection. According to the Web site, it is "envisioned as a tool and a resource that can be used by teachers, researchers, students and the general public — in brief, anyone interested in the experiences of Africans who were enslaved and transported to the Americas and the lives of their descendants in the slave societies of the New World."

Authors of the Web site collection are Dr. Jerome Handler, a senior fellow at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Michael Tuite, the director of the Digital Media Laboratory at the University of Virginia. The expanded Web site will be completed over the next several months. The authors invite comments that should be addressed to Handler at jh3v@virginia.edu.
