Alcorn State University (Miss.) received $750,000 from Primerica Financial Services to fund the Teaching Personal Financial Principles to Students project at Alcorn State.

Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus has received $1.46 million from the National Institutes of Health in efforts to bolster mental health research involving persons from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

The University of Kentucky received a $22 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The money will help the university enhance math and science programs across the state's classrooms and in Appalachia.

The University of Michigan received a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The five-year grant will be used to establish the National Poverty Center to study how public policy affects poverty.

The University of Washington has been awarded $534,126 in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant will create a new Community Outreach Partnership Center to direct projects in which community members and university faculty and students work together to improve living and working conditions in Toppenish, a diverse but economically disadvantaged community in the heart of Yakima Valley.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison received a $35 million grant from the National Science Foundation to study how to improve math and science achievement among American students.

The University of Wyoming has received $380,000 from the National Science Foundation to provide scholarships in computer science, engineering and mathematics. Seventeen $3,000 scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing computer science, engineering or mathematics degrees starting in the fall of 2003. The scholarships are limited to students with demonstrated financial need, especially women and ethnic minorities.
