Congressional Black Caucus Selects New Leaders
By Charles Dervarics

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., will head the Congressional Black Caucus in 2003 after winning a December election among caucus members.

Cummings, who is entering his fourth term, is a Baltimore attorney and former state legislator who has a strong record of support for education. He will replace Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, who served as caucus leader during the recently concluded Congress.

Caucus members also elected Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-Texas, as vice chairwoman of the caucus and Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., as second vice chairwoman for the new Congress that convenes in January.
