Sorority’s Gift to Howard Worth a Million Bucks
WASHINGTON
A visit to Howard University’s campus from members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. last month was worth a million bucks to the historically Black school in Washington, D.C.
The national sorority presented university officials with a $1 million check during activities on the campus marking the sorority’s 90th anniversary. The money will benefit the university’s Campaign for Howard, a five-year initiative launched in March 2002 to raise $250 million to further enhance the university’s academic programs and to create new facilities for learning and research (see Black Issues, March 14, 2002).
“This gift, as a contribution to the Campaign for Howard, is an investment in the future leaders who will emerge from our great institution,” says Howard President H. Patrick Swygert.
In addition to the $1 million gift, members of the sorority, which was founded on Howard’s campus in 1913, conducted a number of public service activities in the university’s surrounding community to mark the anniversary, including events at Howard University Hospital, Banneker High School and Gage Eckington Middle School.
“It is only fitting that we return to the site of the organization’s beginning, Howard University, to mark this auspicious occasion,” says Gwendolyn Boyd, Delta Sigma Theta’s national president. “This $1 million contribution is our sorority’s way of not only honoring the memory and legacy of our founders, but it is consistent with our commitment to academic excellence and scholarship.”
Delta Sigma Theta is the largest Black Greek-lettered organization and the largest African American women’s organization with more than 200,000 members in more than 900 chapters throughout the United States and abroad.
